St. Piran arrived in Cornwall floating on a millstone across the sea from Ireland in the 6th century. Legend has it that he lit a fire on his black hearthstone which was evidently a slab of tin bearing ore, the heat caused smelting to take place and the tin rose to the top in the shape of a white cross – symbolising the light of truth shining in the darkness.
